The COVID-19 pandemic has led to many employees shifting from in-person to online work. Though many professionals enjoy the working from home experience, it can be very difficult to generate the same productivity and team connection, when you and your colleagues are physically in different locations. How can you increase your working from home productivity?
Telecommuting, also known as working remotely, is often viewed as an incentive for organizations prioritizing flexibility. At this stage, most employees and companies have experienced technical and communication problems resulting from remote work, which can cause frustration. Despite external factors, you can do things to maintain a high level of performance and increase your working from home productivity. Here are four ways to succeed in working from home and maintain high performance!
1. Remove or Restrict Distractions from Your Workspace
Even though you care about and love your family, they can be the most significant drain on your time during working hours. Set firm boundaries around work time, when you should not be interrupted or disturbed. Create a pet or child care schedule throughout the day and use it. Consider requesting help from family members and friends to find something that best fits your needs. Also, creating a designated workspace such as an office or separate area within an organized and clean room will help you stay on track.
2. Keep a Routine
Most professionals set a routine when they leave their homes to go into an office. There is usually some schedule, including when you wake up, get ready for your day and head out to work. When working from home, it's easier for professionals to lose track of time because they do not have to stay on a routine. They may start waking up later than usual, just getting out of bed and starting work. While this may sound more relaxed and enticing, being too casual can lead to less efficient time management habits. If you consider the inclusion of distractions, it's easy to see how an eight-hour day can become a nine- or ten-hour workday to catch up and get your work completed. Make a point of using your calendar and prioritize tasks to know what you should be working on and when.
3. Limit Your Social Media Time
While social media can be beneficial in many respects, it can also be one of the ways to waste time. Most social media websites, apps, and platforms are designed to keep you continuously scrolling through your feed to see what your friends and connections are doing. When you couple social media with other socializing options, including talking on the phone and various chat platforms, what you think will be a short break turns into an hour or more of catching up on personal events, activities, and statuses. Reduce your time on social media throughout the workday. Removing social media apps from your tablet or phone can also be an excellent way to disconnect from the instant updates broadcast to you.
4. Reach Out to Your Team
With potential distractions online and at home, it's easy to lose the connection with your teammates. Actively reach out via phone or email to check in if you have questions or for status updates. Even taking the time to contact your co-workers just to see if they are safe and healthy can improve your team dynamic while apart. Everyone is a person with a life away from work, so taking the time to show that you truly care about them can enhance your working relationship.
Current global health regulations still encourage many people to work from home. Working remotely from home can be easy for some executives and professionals. Avoiding distractions and maintaining a regular work schedule can be key factors in keeping your productivity level high.
