What does happiness mean to you?

In my last post, I talked a little bit about how I struggled through bouts of depression as I dealt with the perceived failure of my company. However, I made the conscious decision to fight it. Over the course of the next few months, I read as much as I could and listened to as many Audible books focused on the following topics:

  1. Startups

  2. Goal Setting

  3. What are the components of happiness?

In combination with my personal experiences over the last few months, I came up with my own theory on what the elements of happiness are. Obviously, everyone will have their own definition of happiness, but I would argue that these elements would apply to anyone.

  1. Being and feeling healthy

  2. Financial freedom

  3. Freedom to spend time doing the things that you love

Over the course of the next few months, I’ll expand my thoughts on each of these areas in more detail. However, for now, I just wanted to summarize why I think these are the three foundational elements of happiness. To me, happiness is about the central concept of freedom: if you do things because you choose to do them rather than because you have to do them, that is the backbone of a really good life. These three concepts are all very important, and I often struggle as to which one is the most important. Ultimately, I think I have listed them in order of importance, and that each one enables the next in this list.

Being and Feeling Healthy

At the end of the day, if you aren’t healthy, mentally and physically, you’re unable to focus on the elements of happiness. Mental and physical health are tied together. If you’re not eating right, exercising, drinking water, etc., you’re going to feel tired and depressed. That doesn’t put you in the mental state to achieve the other elements of happiness such as identifying and pursuing passive income streams.

Financial Freedom

What do I mean by this? At the end of the day, I’ll use the Rich Dad Poor Dad definition of financial freedom which is having enough passive income to exceed one’s living expenses. The key to this definition is passive income. Any income that is directly tied to your time and effort is not passive income. Passive income is generated when you are asleep or when you are on vacation. One of the main focuses of this blog will be to investigate different forms of passive income. Having enough passive income to exceed expenses removes stresses, worries, and obligations. That facilitates the last component of happiness.

Freedom to Spend Time Doing the Things that You Love

Let’s face it: this is the ultimate goal for everyone. Time is so precious. Everyone wants to be able to choose how they spend their time: with loved ones, pursuing passions, learning new things. Financial freedom makes that happen. You would no longer be “going to work” because you had to. Any work that you would be doing would be because you chose to. That’s a powerful concept. However, without the first two elements of happiness, this third one would not very difficult if not impossible to achieve. If you’re not feeling mentally and physically healthy, you would not have the focus and energy necessary to achieve financial freedom. Without financial freedom, you wouldn’t have complete control over your time. You would have to work to ensure you can cover your living expenses.
